Colombia
Andean coffee grown by more than half a million families
About Colombia
Colombia's coffee grows along the three branches of the Andes, from the far south near Ecuador to the Sierra Nevada in the north. Because the country sits close to the equator, many regions have two harvests a year: a main crop and a smaller "mitaca" crop. That means fresh Colombian coffee is available for much of the year.
Most Colombian coffee comes from small family farms of just a few hectares, many of which wash and dry their own coffee. The Coffee Cultural Landscape of the Eje Cafetero is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a growing number of producers are experimenting with varieties like Pink Bourbon and Geisha and with extended and anaerobic fermentation.
